The quote is from DodgeBall: A True Underdog Story If you haven’t seen it you should.
Played dodge-ball today for the first time ever! [adverse effect of not growing up in North America] … it was a blast! It was 4 on 4 and yours truly got right into it … cackling away maniacally as I whipped foam at Dr RW, the resident and medical students! It wasn’t all fun and games … I took one right in the specs! [courtesy of RW … revenge pending].
Actually I lie – it was all fun and games – a clever invention by one of our junior residents to enhance wellness. Fitness with Floyd is a once-per block post academic half day work out where we get together and blow off some steam. And it works … sweatier than a grizzly bear in a Chewbacca suit, I felt invigorated … alive!
Clearly play and good health are related. Most residents do take time out for themselves and achieve balance and most residency programs should have some kind of mechanism to ensure resident wellness, but I wonder if they go so far as to play together. I think that this kind of group activity is a must … I would encourage all programs to do this. It just makes sense on so many levels.
[by the way U of S FRCPC EM Program comes up as the 9th hit for “Resident Wellness” woot!]
